August a big month for containers through Fremantle

“PORT of Fremantle saw a very busy August in terms of container throughput, with the biggest throughput in at least three years, according to the latest trade statistics released by the port.

August saw 72,412 TEU cross the wharves at Fremantle, an increase of 22% on the previous month, and a 12% rise on August 2017.

Delving into the numbers, we find increases in all categories reported by the port except for coastal exports.

Total coastal trade through the port went gangbusters in August, with 11,372 TEU, the largest amount of containerised cargo through the port at least since 2015. It also represented a 33% increase on the previous month, and a 37% increase on the same month last year. Coastal exports in August totalled 746 TEU and coastal imports totalled 10,626 TEU for the month.

Overseas trade was also strong at 61,040 TEU in August, an uptick of 21% on the previous month. Overseas exports from Freo in August came to 33,069 TEU, and overseas imports for the month totalled 27,971 TEU.

The DP World Australia terminal at Fremantle recently received delivery of a new quay crane, which is to boost efficiency and capacity at the terminal.”
